Coleus: Shade Loving and Gorgeous
I tried growing Coleus this year and may have discovered one of my new favorite plants. After researching plants suitable for an almost entirely shaded area, Coleus quickly became a top contender. While some varieties thrive in full sun, those with richer, more intricate colors tend to do well in partial shade. In my case, the plants were placed in a spot that received dappled light, shaded by a large Jacaranda and palm trees. And wow—such stunning colors!
So far, I’ve grown them from seed, propagated them from store-bought plants, planted them in the ground, and potted them. All methods have been successful. Moving forward, I plan to direct seed Coleus in early spring along the main walkway leading to the house. I expect some damage from snails and garden pests, and of course, curious dogs might also indulge. But I enjoy scattering seeds on the ground— it gives me a relaxed, unattached approach. When the dogs or snails dig them up, I simply toss out more seeds and keep trying.
