Food Forest Update
It’s been an exciting week as we welcome the Spring! Last week’s heat wave was tricky, new plants were pretty confused and there was a fair amount of leaf scorching, but since we entered Spring time, it seems like our weather patterns are back on track.
New Plants
Over the weekend, some new trees went into the fruit lines. New additions include a Macadamia nut tree, an Oro Blanco Grapefruit, an Apple, an Apricot as well as 3 of the Moringas that had been waiting on deck to be potted. The aromatic rows also saw some additions and welcomed some sage, sorrel, basil, lemon grass and of course, more lavender.
Existing Fruit Trees
As for the existing plants, the banana trees are struggling - the heat wave definitely caused some leaf scorching and wilting. Extra water and heavy mulch help and they’ll bounce back, but looking rough at the moment.
The mango, nectarine, grapefruit and pomegranate are all doing great with new growth, flower buds and baby leaves turning bright green. The naval orange trees show new growth but also signs of scorching from the heat wave.
Emergent Plants
This week, a volunteer Amaranth plant is going nuts - it must put on 4-6 inches of growth daily, almost incredible. The Mexican sunflowers and castor plants are all thriving. Ash trees are showing a lot of new growth while the transplanted oak trees continue to struggle.
